In a recent article, Philadelphia Eagle owner Jeff Laurie has opted to remove Chip Kelly as the head coach of his football team. The search begins for a new leader that will enhance the overall team production. The primary mistake that owner Jeff Laurie has emphasized is the necessity for a Emotional Intelligence as a specific alternative to the leadership style associated with Chip Kelly.
According to the article, After Chip Kelly, Eagles looking for coach with “emotional intelligence”, the Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeff Laurie will seek a coach who has the ability to get along with others. The coach will have to massage the egos of prominent players and lead support staff and other players by using emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence leadership characteristics will not repair the damage associated with Chip Kelly racism.
What are the leadership characteristics associated with emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to perceive, control and evaluate emotions. Some researchers suggest that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened, while others claim it is an inborn characteristic.
Salovey and Mayer proposed a model that identified four different factors of emotional intelligence: the perception of emotion, the ability reason using emotions, the ability to understand emotion and the ability to manage emotions.
- Perceiving Emotions: The first step in understanding emotions is to perceive them accurately. In many cases, this might involve understanding nonverbal signals such as body language and facial expressions.
- Reasoning With Emotions: The next step involves using emotions to promote thinking and cognitive activity. Emotions help prioritize what we pay attention and react to; we respond emotionally to things that garner our attention.
- Understanding Emotions: The emotions that we perceive can carry a wide variety of meanings. If someone is expressing angry emotions, the observer must interpret the cause of their anger and what it might mean. For example, if your boss is acting angry, it might mean that he is dissatisfied with your work; or it could be because he got a speeding ticket on his way to work that morning or that he’s been fighting with his wife.
- Managing Emotions: The ability to manage emotions effectively is a crucial part of emotional intelligence. Regulating emotions, responding appropriately and responding to the emotions of others are all important aspect of emotional management.
The problem with using Emotional Intelligence is that the problem that is associated with Chip Kelly is racism. It is the same as trying to tighten a bolt with a screw driver. You will never tighten the screw because you are using the wrong tool.
What are the leadership characteristics needed to eliminate the ramifications associated with Chip Kelly racism?

Social justice leaders define and create theories and practices that ensure greater opportunities for all.
Transformational leaders use research teams as a way of sharing power and allow subordinates to experiment with new ideas. Transformational leaders create a reflective thinking process that results in rethinking patterns of historical behavior and enables subordinates to look at problems from different angles, and facilitate second-order changes. Transactional leaders require compliance from employees in exchange for expected rewards and bureaucratic authority empowers transactional leadership. Feminist leaders create people-centered organizations by ensuring staff members treat subordinates with respect and dignity.
