Recent racial allegations in schools have lead schools to rethink the process for implementing discipline for Black students which include discipline referrals. Without such strategies racial allegations will continue to be at the center of civil litigation for many schools. Many of the problems associated with discipline referrals that are deemed racist are associated with the information submitted. Teachers are on the front line and in most cases, as a group, they will submit the majority of discipline referrals. In most schools, teachers may submit anywhere from 75 to 90 percent of the discipline referrals. Once a discipline referral is submitted it is up to the administrator to investigate and make a judgment.

A recent Associated Press article indicates that Michael Brown, a Black unarmed teenager was shot multiple times by a suburban St. Louis police officer. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said that the shooting occurred after Mr. Brown and another individual in a predominately-Black suburb north of St. Louis encountered an officer. According to the Police Chief Belmar, a struggle ensued and one of the men pushed the police officer back into the squad car. The struggle continued into the street where Mr. Brown was shot multiple times.

Two Greeley Central High School teachers were involved in a teacher student fight over the student’s hat. On Monday October 27, in the hallway, a teacher asked a student to remove his hat. It is said that the student began cussing and the teacher proceeded to remove the hat from the student’s head. The student responded by punching the teacher three times. A second teacher helped to escort the student to the office and the student punched the teacher.

You will find that parents who complain about school or classroom discipline do not complain about the consequence itself but whether the teacher delves out consequences that are fair and consistent.
