In a recent article, it was determined that a number of California schools were guilty of racism due to the classroom discipline associated with Black and Hispanic students. The disciplinary data was retrieved from the Californian Department of Education. It would have helped those schools districts to use the Raccelerate Racism Formula in conjunction with the Raccelerate Racism Scale as tools to determine their progress with reducing classroom discipline.

The Raccelerate Racism Formula and the Raccelerate Racism Scale are products of the Raccelerate Phenomenon. The Raccelerate Phenomenon was developed by Dr. Derrick L. Campbell in September, 2014.

The Raccelerate Phenomenon has roots in Newton’s Third Law of Motion. Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that when one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body. In elementary terms, Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The Raccelerate Phenomenon follows the same principle as Newton’s Third Law of Motion in that whenever there is a perceived infringement by a Black male against a White female there is an negative overreaction portrayed in the media. Specifically, the Raccelerate Phenomenon states that for every action that a Black male takes against a White female there is an elevated negative reaction towards Black men. The Raccelerate Phenomenon is the cause for many of the racial tensions between Blacks and Whites.

The Raccelerate Phenomenon has an impact on the education, unemployment, incarceration, and poverty level of Black men. Presently there are over 125 million and 20 million White women and Black men respectively in the United States. The graduation rate for White women is 88%. the graduation for Black men is 52%. The unemployment rate for White women is 7.1%. The unemployment rate for Black men is 13.3%. The prison rate for White women is 15%. The prison rate for Black men is 64%. The poverty rate for White woman is 11.6%. The poverty rate for Black men is 35%.

There were several schools districts that were identified as racist because they were over disciplining Black students. At this time they remain anonymous. According to the following chart the schools/school district would have had the following ratings according to the Raccelerate Racism Scale.

School/School District Number of Students Suspended Total Number of Students Raccelerate Racism Scale Rating Possible Racial Problem
School A 6,181 15,080 4.5 Extreme
School B 3,499 39,486 3.0 High

The Raccelerate Racism Formula provides schools a formula for determining classroom discipline that is associated with alleged racism against students in their school or school district. The symbol for the Raccelerate Racism Formula is denoted: RRF

School Version

RRF = In ((Number of Students Suspended)/ Total Number of Students) + 5.4

In = Natural Log

The Raccelerate Racism Scale is a 0 to 10 numerical scale.

RRF Possible Racial Problem
0-1 No
1-2 Slight
2-3 Moderate
3-4 High
4-10 Extreme

Teacher Version

RRF = In ((Number of Student Discipline Referrals)/ Total Number of Students) + 5.4

In = Natural Log

The Raccelerate Racism Scale is a 0 to 10 numerical scale.

RRF Possible Racial Problem
0-1 No
1-2 Slight
2-3 Moderate
3-4 High
4-10 Extreme

For teachers, I recommend using The Raccelerate Racism Formula and the Raccelerate Racism Scale at least on a monthly basis to gauge any implications of classroom racism that result from classroom discipline. This will provide teachers with an early warning system that they can use and make adjustments throughout the school year. Many teachers are caught off guard when they become the blame. The Raccelerate Formula and the Raccelerate Racism Scale will help teachers to be reflective in their practice and avoid the blame associated with classroom racism that results from classroom discipline.
